Senator Gillibrand Endorses Veteran Claire Russo for Virginia’s 5th District

Earlysville, VA – Today, Senator Gillibrand announced her endorsement of Claire Russo in her campaign for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.

“Claire Russo has served our country as a Marine, a Department of the Army advisor, and as the spouse of an active duty service member. Claire has always run toward the tough fights, and whether it’s lowering the cost of prescription drugs, passing common sense gun safety measures, or advocating for women’s equality, I know Claire will continue to run toward the fight on behalf of the people of Virginia’s 5th district. I can’t wait to see her continue her service as a Member of Congress and I am so excited to endorse her campaign.” Senator Gillibrand said in a statement.

Following her sexual assault by a Marine Officer senior to her in 2004, Claire took on the military bureaucracy to make sure her attacker was prosecuted and jailed. Since then, Claire has been an advocate for women’s equality in the military.

“Senator Gillibrand has been a champion for women and working families” said Claire Russo, candidate for Congress in Virginia’s 5th district. “I’ve admired her work on ending military sexual assault and I look forward to working with her on this issue and more in Congress.”

Claire joined the Marine Corps at 23 and served as an Intelligence Officer, deploying to Fallujah, Iraq where she led a team of Marines targeting insurgent networks. She continued her service working as a civilian advisor to the Department of the Army, eventually serving on General Petraeus’s counter insurgency advisory team where she evaluated the training and employment of female engagement teams and their support of special operations forces in Afghanistan. Claire and her husband Josh, an Army Special Forces Officer, live in Earlysville with their three children.
